Newcastle University Research Map

Netskills developed an interactive map to show the countries where research is carried out within the School of Geography, Politics & Sociology at Newcastle University.

The School of GPS at Newcastle University approached Netskills to help them represent the diverse places that they conduct research. This includes projects in over 20 countries on subjects that concern many more.

The approach taken was to use the Google Maps API to embed an interactive map within the GPS site, then overlay this with appropriate markers. This allowed for custom user controls, such as filtering the map to show staff or student projects, or to zoom to specific regions of the map.

To simplify maintenance, a simple spreadsheet was developed for data entry, from which the XML data required for the map is produced automatically. This allows the map to be updated without the use of JavaScript or XML.
