Assessment for Learning Underpinning Concepts

Included in this section are resources for developing an understanding of the concepts behind aligning learning outcomes, teaching and learning activities with assessment activities.

The hands on activities should be underpinned by the two further sections on concepts and resources.

Hands-on Activities

This section contains a series of activities aimed at developing and understanding alignment across teaching, learning and assessment.

The activity brief explains how to use the analysis, assessment matrix and the design blueprint alongside the case study.

Aligning Assessment to Learning

Alignment of learning and assessment activities to meet learning outcomes is a key factor in developing meaningful learning and assessing understanding.

It should be the underpinning concept when writing intended learning outcomes, which leads to the selection of meaningful learning activities and related assessment criteria.

Guidance on Assessment

There are many different assessment methods used in higher education to assess learners performance'.

The chosen method should validly assess the expressed learning outcomes and be aligned with the overall aims of the programme.

This should include the development of disciplinary skills and support the development of vocational competencies where required.
