Information Skills for Teachers: Is Google Enough? Description of workshop run for the Information Skills for Teachers project, 2006
Everyone uses Google to find information on the web, but could you be using it more effectively? Or indeed, is there life beyond Google? This workshop will give you a greater understanding of how Google works and equip you to search it, and other sites, more effectively. You will also assess your own skills in finding and using information more generally, identifying your strengths and weaknesses and developing strategies for improvement.

- A comparison of Google and other search tools, including subject gateways and the 'invisible web'
- Efficient searching methods and strategies, including tips on searching Google effectively
- What's new in web searching
- Information quality issues on the web
Who is it for?
The workshop is aimed at secondary school teachers who use the web to find information and wish to improve their searching and information skills.
Participants are expected to have basic computer skills and to be familiar with using the web through a browser such as Internet Explorer.
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
- Examined their own use of information, both in the workplace and elsewhere
- Investigated different types of web search sites
- Used advanced search techniques and discussed the pros and cons of different ways of searching
- Explored the latest technology in searching and information delivery
- Conducted an information skills self-assessment to identify strengths and weaknesses
