Information Skills: Is Google Enough?
This workshop will give you a greater understanding of how Google works and equip you to search it, and other sites, more effectively. The workshop also provides you with the opportunity to explore what else is out there, learn about new developments in searching and think about how to evaluate web sites for quality.

- How Google works and how it differs to other search engines
- Why search engines fail
- A comparison of other search tools, including subject gateways and the 'invisible web'
- Efficient searching methods and strategies
- Tips on searching Google effectively
- What's new in web searching
- Information quality issues on the web
Who is it for?
This workshop is aimed at anyone who uses the web to find information and anyone who wishes to improve their search skills, whether at Google or other sites.
Participants need no special technical skills; however basic computer skills such as using a mouse and keyboard are required. Participants are expected to have seen the World Wide Web and used a web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
- Investigated different types of web-based information service
- Examined advanced techniques used in information seeking
- Developed searching strategies and used Boolean operators to perform web searches
- Tested their search skills and discussed the pros and cons of different ways of searching
- Explored the latest technology in searching and information delivery
- Investigated quality issues related to web-based information
