NVivo 8: Software for qualitative data analysis

This two day workshop introduces the primary tools available in NVivo, an application that enables you to release the potential of qualitative data. We consider how to classify, manage and analyse a range of data types including audio and video sources, pictures and transcripts. We've re-written and extended the workshop in order to cover the new features of the latest version, NVivo 8.

Topics:

  • Creating, saving and backing-up projects
  • Importing and exporting documents
  • Transcribing voice files
  • Creating and using Codes (Nodes) with different kinds of data
  • Links, sets, memos and annotations
  • Queries and searches
  • Defining relationships in coding
  • Data security
  • Developing a coding structure and re-working ideas
  • Visualising projects with modelling, charts and reports

By the end of the workshop participants will have:

  • Opened and developed a new NVivo project
  • Explored the tools NVivo 8 offers to help researchers organise, manage and retrieve a variety of data
  • Create basic coding of data
  • Developed analyses through using query tools, sets, relationships and models

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for anyone undertaking qualitative research who would like to use software to assist their organisation and analysis of data (for example postgraduate students, academics and research staff).

A basic understanding of Microsoft Word and the principles of qualitative research would be helpful. Participants will be expected to have sample data available to work with during the event.
