Location Location Location: How to Harness and Use Online Mapping Tools
On the web today, the question "where are you?" is as important as "what are you doing?"
Sophisticated online mapping tools such as Google Earth and Bing Maps have been around for some time but now social networks encourage us to share where we are and devices like smartphones automatically include location information in the media we create.
This workshop shows you how to harness these technologies and incorporate them into your own practice as well as discussing the important implications for privacy associated with using them.
Topics:
- Geo-everything: deciphering the jargon
- Mapping your own world using Google Maps and Google Earth
- Geotagging: adding location information to digital media
- Data mash-ups: combining information from a range of sources and presenting them using maps.
- An introduction to augmented reality and mobile geolocation technology
- Managing the risks of publicising your personal location details
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
- Created their own annotated maps in Google Maps or other platforms
- Discovered how to add location data to digital images
- Created maps using GPS tracking data
- Created a basic data map mash-up using free web-tools
- Evaluated the potential of geo-enabled technologies in their practice
