Federated Access Management: Core Skills for Service Providers
There are FREE, JISC-funded places available on this workshop for publishers and JISC community institutions who are working within the UK federation (one place per organisation). See the booking form for details.
Federated Access Management (FAM) offers a secure, scalable and user friendly environment for organisations to manage web access to their resources. This two-day workshop, developed with JISC funding, addresses the core technical skills and practical steps required to act as a Service Provider (SP) within the UK Access Management Federation.
Participants will have the opportunity to see the systems working for real and examine the components that make them work - as well as exploring examples of current best practice. They should also leave able to make informed choices about how they can progress and aware of the expectations of the UK federation community, along with the support it can provide.
Topics:
- What is Federated Access Management and what does it offer you?
- The UK Access Management Federation - what it does and how to participate
- Roles and responsibilities of both identity and service providers
- A technical overview - skills, software and server environments
- Installation and configuration of Shibboleth for service providers
- Current Shibboleth versions and the UK federation
- Managing attributes and user information
- Delivering the user experience - discovery, personalisation and best practice
- Support and federation community engagement
Who is it for?
This event is aimed primarily at those with a responsibility for technical implementation and ideally participants will need to be comfortable with the administration of computer systems and web applications. If participants are already involved in the delivery of existing web resources, then a working knowledge of their own infrastructure would be an advantage.
Non-systems staff, who choose to attend, should be able to gain an effective overview of the technical set-up required and how it fits in to an overall strategy for service provision within the UK Access Management Federation.
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
- Discussed their current experience and understanding of Federated Access Management
- Reviewed the practical steps required to participate as a service provider to the UK Access Management Federation
- Explored the core skills and technical infrastructure required for an in-house SP deployment
- Followed a basic Shibboleth-based SP build and also considered alternative configuration options
- Examined the configuration of a Shibboleth-based SP to work with the UK federation
- Investigated a range uf user-experience issues and seen examples of current good practice
- Reviewed the current support available to service providers working in the UK federation
