Community Participation with Blogs and Social Networking
Netskills Training Suite, Herschel Building, Newcastle University
The "social web" can often seem a bewildering place, full of trolls, avatars, tweets, pokes, Nings and other mysterious, arcane language. For many, this is a barrier to using this technology. Tools like blogs and social networking offer many advantages to the education community but are sometimes hard to break into.
This workshop will help you overcome common hurdles and start using these tools to carve out your own identity and share your message with the widest audience possible.
Topics:
- The social web in action - examples of how blogs and social networks are being used in education
- The different purposes of blogging
- How to blog - finding your voice and choosing a platform
- How to monitor and increase visits to your blog
- Using social networking sites effectively
- Managing the flow of information using RSS feeds and other tools
- Maintaining your online reputation and making the most of the "back-channel" of online conversation at live events
Who is it for?
The workshop is for anyone with an interest in establishing and developing their online presence. It will be of value to non-bloggers who want to explore the possibilities and established social networkers who want to develop their use of the technologies.
No previous knowledge of the topic is needed but familiarity with a web browser is essential. People who come on this course may also be interested in our workshop on "Writing for the Web"
