Will was the first of five new recruits to start work at Netskills in 2005. However he didn't have to move far, having been a Research Associate at Newcastle University for four years, working on a resource enhancement project that made a vast corpus of local Tyneside speech recordings available online.
Having come from a research background, Will is aware that the modern research community is truly global; ideas are exchanged, working papers written and data presented - all online. Since joining Netskills he has developed, and now manages, a programme of training specifically for postgraduate research students.
Will is an experienced and skilled web developer and author. He believes that the web is all about communication and is interested in the effective use of web technologies for this purpose. His specific areas of interest include:
- Web accessibility and usability issues
- XHTML for structure, CSS for style
- Understanding user behaviour
- Writing for the web - Making every word count
- Using web authoring tools to aid wed development
Will's friendly, open and flexible approach to training helps attendees on his workshops feel at ease and gain maximum benefit from their day.
As a postgraduate student, Will worked as a consultant for a local company delivering team-building and team-working training. He believes in the effectiveness of teams and learning through experience. In fact the Netskills team has been subjected to a number of exercises and activities since he arrived - it's amazing what can be achieved using only a deck of cards or a length of rope, a whistle and some cloth!
Will has a keen interest in the outdoors, a passion for travel and good food. He is a keen watcher and player of sport, and is also a qualified cricket coach - hopefully uncovering the stars of tomorrow!
