Securing future access to web resources

This year Netskills has helped over 120 institutions make the transition to the UK Access Management Federation by showing them how to act as an Identity Provider for their users, thereby securing access to the online resources they are licensed to use.

Federated Access Management: Core Skills for Identity Providers has been running since October 2007 and so far 11 full events have taken place at 8 different venues around the UK. Additional JISC funding, enabled over 100 participants, mostly from the FE sector, to attend free of charge.

"These courses have helped to firmly embed core IdP skills within the HE/FE community." says Mark Williams from the JISC Access Management Transition Team, who also added that, "The training has been particularly well received by its recipients and is providing institutions with genuine confidence that they can manage identity driven access management and participate fully in the UK Federation."

The workshop itself has been continually updated throughout the programme, as Chris Young from Netskills explains, "The deployment landscape for the Federation community has been evolving over the past year. Keeping pace with the changes has been a challenge, but is a great example of how we are working to support major JISC initiatives within the UK HE and FE community."
