Last week saw the launch of Netskills training specifically for postgraduates. Twenty two postgrads from Newcastle University attended a two-day workshop titled Harnessing the Web for Researchers and left with skills for creating web pages and utilising the Web for their studies.
The workshop was a resounding success: "Netskills have run an excellent workshop - I would recommend it to anyone" wrote one participant. "I was really amazed I could create a webpage in just one day!" wrote another.
Netskills pre-registered participants for web publishing at Newcastle University and by the end of the second day many postgrads had already uploaded their first pages for the world to see.
The modern research community is truly global and close collaboration with colleagues located around the world is commonplace today; ideas are exchanged, working papers written and data presented - all ‘online’. This workshop gave postgrads the opportunity to experiment with the latest tools and resources for online collaboration, including blogs, wikis, podcasts and social bookmarking.
Netskills Consultant Trainer Will Allen has developed the programme. "It's designed to be flexible and adapted to meet the specific training need of each group of postgraduates" he said. "This workshop has shown that there is a definite desire from postgrads to gain the skills to make the most of the Web and to use it to promote themselves to peers, the research community and also to potential future employers."
